Hello 2017! What were some of your resolutions for this new year?

I don’t know about you, but I’m trying to eat a little healthier, exercise a little more and spend more time away from the screen. All difficult things to do when you’re a mom and a food blogger ????!

Lately I’ve been trying to up my fruit intake (winter is kind of blah when it comes to fresh fruit) and smoothies have been an easy & delicious way to do that. This particular smoothie is one that we’re throwing into our rotation, not because it tastes amazing (even thought it does), but because it’s packed full of wholesome ingredients that can help fight off colds & make your skin glow. ✨

Here’s what you’ll need:

Pineapple- an excellent source of vitamin C (fights of free radicals to prevent aging lines) and manganese… also a good source of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, dietary fiber, folate and pantothenic acid.

Strawberries- rich in vitamin C, they can help remove the excess sebum on skin & lighten blemishes/acne scars.

Raspberries-  contain a good amount of anthocyanin pigments which are natural antioxidants (which reduce the age spots and discoloration, similar to strawberries). They also protect the skin against the sun’s UV rays. ????Blueberries- packed full of anthocyanin pigments that shield the skin against harmful free radicals that can damage the collagen that keeps your skin firm. They’re also packed with vitamin C, fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin B6 and phytonutrient content.

Banana- rich in pectin, a soluble dietary fiber and natural detoxifying agent, which is great for digestion. Not necessarily super great for skin, but good for your overall health… also it helps make this smoothie nice and creamy. ????

Spinach- loaded with antioxidants, which are important for normal skin cell development and encourage a healthy skin tone. Vitamin A in spinach can also help your skin retain moisture to fight against dryness & acne.

Orange juice & zest- packed full of Vitamin C to help fight off colds, but also Vitamin A along with B complex vitamins, including B1 and folate, can improve blood flow to the skin, delivering oxygen and nutrients needed to maintain healthy skin tone (smooth skin). The antioxidants and limonoids in oranges are thought to destroy the free radicals that contribute to the formation of skin cancer. ????

Flaxseed- the omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseeds increase the speed at which wounds heal. Flaxseed is also known for it’s anti-inflammatory levels which help minimize skin irritation, rashes, inflammation and redness.

Hemp hearts- an excellent source of omega-3, stearidonic acid, and omega-6 Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). GLA helps to reduce cholesterol & inflammation, balances hormones, improves heart health and skin/hair health. They also contain magnesium, fibre, iron, zinc, and phosphorous.

Whew. We made it.

I know that sounds like a long list, but everything serves a purpose. All you need to do is toss everything into your blender and blend away! I personally prefer using frozen fruit (which is easy if you’ve prepped little smoothie bags ahead of time), however, it’ll taste just as delicious without. Toss in a few cubes of ice and you’re good to go!

Yield: 1 large or 2 smalls smoothies
Ingredients
  • 1 c. raspberries
  • ½ c. strawberries
  • ½ c. pineapple chunks
  • ¼ c. blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 c. spinach
  • 1 orange, juice and zest
  • 1 tbsp. flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp. hemp hearts
Directions
  1. Place all ingredients in the bowl of blender, placing the heaviest ones on top. Blend until smooth, about 1-2 minutes.
Notes
-For a creamy protein boost, try adding ¼ c. Greek yogurt.
-I generally prefer freezing my fruit (orange excluded) before blending it into a smoothie. It makes for a much thicker smoothie, and you don't need to add any ice.
