Mixed Berry Smoothie

Here in Utah, we grow lots of vegetables, especially during the summer and early fall, which is wonderful, but it’s often difficult to find fresh berries. Berries are high in antioxidants which are great for your immune system. They’re also high in nutrients, fiber, and can help with your overall health.

So when I’m scooting past the fruit in the grocery store and I see decent looking strawberries, raspberries or blueberries, I always grab them! I love eating them straight out of the container, using them in muffins or tossing them into smoothies, like today’s Mixed Berry Smoothie.

To make a healthy smoothie make sure to include low-fat greek yogurt rather than sugary and processed yogurt. If you want to change it up and really pack in those vitamins I also suggest adding in a handful of spinach!

How to Make a Berry Smoothie + Tips

Of course – smoothies are easy, but here are some tips you may want to know before starting.

  • To make my smoothie I start by putting in my blender low-fat vanilla yogurt, banana, berries and a small scoop of ice.
  •  If you’ve got fresh or frozen fruit on hand but don’t have yogurt, you can always use milk and extra ice.
  • If you don’t have fresh berries at your disposal frozen bags of berries are a great option. This is a great option because most of the bags of frozen berries are picked and then frozen at peak freshness.

Just a little tip, when I buy yogurt I like to freeze some in ice cube trays, pop them out and store them in a ziplock bag, that way I always have some for smoothies!

And if you have extra smoothie leftover, just freeze it for another day! Load your smoothie mix into an air-tight container with a lid for up to 3 months. To consume let it defrost for about 2 hours.

Most kids are a fan of berry smoothies because they are sweet. To ensure that they enjoy this drink make sure that you are using ripe berries and if you are sneaking in some greens avoid kale and other harsh tasting veggies.

I can’t wait until peaches are back in season, I think they’d taste amazing in one of these!
