Variations
Frosting – I love all the flavors of chocolate so of course I used chocolate buttercream frosting in this recipe but you can use any frosting you prefer like cream cheese frosting.
Box Cake Mix – You can use any cake mixture you prefer. For these bite-sized treats I like using a box cake mix because it is quick to throw together but you can use any cake recipe you’d prefer and if you want one that is homemade then I recommend my Chocolate Cake.

How to Make Chocolate Cake Pops
Step 1: In a large bowl prepare your box cake mix according to the box directions. (Mine called for the typical large eggs, vegetable oil, and water.) Scoop the batter into a baking pan and bake in your oven according to the box directions.

Step 2: After the cake has baked, place the warm cake (you don’t have to wait for it to cool) in a stand mixer on medium speed and crumble it up using a paddle attachment. You can also use a large mixing bowl and an electric handheld mixer.

Step 3: Once you have cake crumbs, add in 2 Tbsp of chocolate frosting. You can add an additional 1-2 Tablespoons of frosting based on your cake pop texture preference.

Step 4: Then, using your cake pop dough, fill each of the smaller cake pop molds scraping off any excess on top and freeze for 30 minutes.

Step 5: While the cake is freezing in the mold, in a medium bowl melt your chocolate candy melts in the microwave and add about 1 teaspoon of shortening to each color to allow the consistency to be a little thinner and easier to work with.
Step 6: Then, remove the cakes from the freezer and pop them out of their mold. Then using the larger cake pop mold pour in the melted chocolate about halfway up the mold, add in the cake center and press down as far as you can so that the chocolate goes up around the sides and top and then scrape off any excess chocolate so that you can make an even pop in the mold.

Step 7: Place the mold in the fridge for 5-10 minutes to set.
Step 8: Once the pops are set, pop them out of the mold and place on a sheet or parchment paper, decorate to your liking, and enjoy!

FAQs
From personal experience candy melts hold up better than chocolate chips. You can use either but you will have more success on a smooth and stable outer coating with candy melts.
Any you prefer! Be creative! Some I like using are sprinkles, flaky sea salt, crushed up cookies or nuts, or anything else that sounds delicious!
Storage Information
These cake pops can be stored in an airtight container on your counter in room temperature for 1-2 days, or in your refrigerator for 3-4 days.
If you want to freeze these cake pops you can do so in an airtight container in your freezer for up to 2 weeks.
