This homemade taco seasoning recipe is quick and easy to whip up, and works great as a seasoning on everything from tacos to veggies and meat. Creating your own taco mix at home allows you to control what is in it and adjust the spice level to your liking.
What is taco seasoning made of? Taco seasoning ingredients are a delicious mixture of spices that you probably have sitting in your spice cabinet right now. This recipe specifically uses the following spices:
- Chili Powder
- Cumin
- Coriander
- Garlic Powder
- Paprika
- Oregano
- Onion Powder
- Salt
- Pepper
- Cayenne Pepper
How to Make Taco Seasoning
MIX. Add ingredients to a small mixing bowl. Mix until thoroughly combined.
SEASON & STORE. Use immediately or store in an airtight container for 9 months. This recipe can be easily doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. Use a heaping 3 tablespoons of mix as needed per recipe.
Storing and Using
Storing? Store in a tightly covered spice jar in a cool dark place, preferably your spice cabinet. This will be best up until the 1 year mark, past then you risk the seasoning losing some of their spice! Typically you will want to double or triple your recipe so that you have fresh taco seasoning for any Mexican recipe.

You can also use it to flavor ground meat to make a homemade taco meat. It is recommended that you use 2-3 tbsps of taco seasoning for 1 pound of ground beef, chicken, or turkey. 2 tbsps is about the serving size you would find in a packet of taco seasoning.
How much water do you add to taco seasoning? If you’re using it in ground meat, you’ll want to add ⅓ cup of water when you add your 2-3 Tbsps of seasonings after draining the fat from the meat .
