What is a Gyro?

A gyro is a dish made with meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie. Typically, it’s served in a pita and made with ground lamb or beef. It is full of spices like chili powder, paprika, coriander, cumin, garlic, parsley, oregano, and thyme. Basically, you’re going for a Middle Eastern taste with a bit of a kick.

Variations

  • Filling Variations: In addition to the classic lettuce, tomato, and onion, enhance your gyro by adding feta cheese for a creamy texture or spreading hummus on the pita for extra flavor.
  • Sauce Option: Tzatziki sauce remains a must for its cool, tangy complement to the spiced meat. Make your own by combining full-fat Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, dill, minced garlic, and olive oil. Allow the flavors to meld overnight for full development.

Expert Tips

  • Marinate Longer: For even more flavor, let the chicken marinate overnight. The longer marination helps the flavors penetrate deeper into the chicken, enhancing the taste.
  • Grill Prep: Oil the grill grates before adding the chicken to prevent sticking. This ensures clean flipping and keeps the meat’s surface intact for better texture and flavor.

The marinade on these are so on point! Delcious. I topped mine with feta and kalamata olives along with the cucumbers, tomato & tzatziki sauce. I always have feta & kalamatas on hand and they were the perfect addition. But that chicken is so good no matter what is topping it! Yummy yum yum!
