 A Favorite Summer Treat

Fruit desserts are my absolute favorite. There’s nothing like cooking or baking with fresh, seasonal fruit! They are at their pique of perfection, and are just SO much more tasty! And for me, peach season is much anticipated.

We also really love BBQ season. You can cook deliciousness outside and not heat your house up!! Round out that BBQ dinner with a sweet ending that you can feel good about. My mouth is watering just thinking about these…really.

These grilled peaches are perfect for this time of year. They only take a few minutes to make and they can be done outside. Win-win! So grab yourself 4 BIG juicy peaches and let’s get grilling!

Tips for Choosing/Grilling Peaches

  • You definitely want to use ripe peaches because these will be the sweetest and give the best flavor to your dessert. Unripe peaches tend to be drier and not as soft.
  • Picking ripe peaches: Ripe peaches will have a bit of give when you press on them. Make sure they are soft, but not overly soft with lots of bruised spots.
  • We recommend using freestone peaches rather than yellow cling, simply because they will hold their shape better during the grilling process.
  • We don’t recommend using canned peaches because they have lost their structural integrity after being canned.
  • Grilling fresh fruit does make it sweeter because all of the natural sugars are being caramelized and brought to the surface.
  • After grilling, your peaches may have a slight “grill-like” flavor to them, depending on your grill and charcoal etc. That’s why we recommend grilling them on medium low heat, so that you don’t get the overwhelming taste of burning propane.

PREP. First, you’ll need to cut the peaches in half and remove the pits. This is much easier with freestone peaches, trust me 🙂 You can probably tell which were clingstone and which were freestone in the picture above. Once the pits have been removed, brush the cut sides with a bit of canola oil.

GRILL. Then pop them onto a hot grill. You can use an outdoor grill OR an indoor grill. Let the peaches cook for 3 minutes or so, then rotate them 9o degrees and allow them to cook for an additional 3-4 minutes. You want them to get nice and caramelized!

SEASON. When they’re done, pull them off and brush them with the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon mixture. Add a pinch of flaky sea salt on top as a finishing touch. This is optional, but I think it really helps balance out and enhance the sweetness of the fruit.

SERVE. Serve them warm with a BIG scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. They’ll disappear in seconds! If you’re looking to go a slightly healthier route, you can always drizzle them with a mixture of honey, cinnamon, vanilla, and sea salt. Yum!!

How to Grill Peaches

Great toppings?

  • If you want to serve them with ice cream I recommend either vanilla or butter pecan. Ice cream like butter pecan gives you a bit of crunch to complement your creamy ice cream and warm/soft peach.
  • Honey and cinnamon!
  • A brush of maple syrup or molasses.

Other good fruit to grill?

  • Nectarines
  • Pineapple
  • Plums
  • Pears
  • Apricots

If you don’t have a grill…

You can still make this delicious dish from home!

STOVETOP: You can use a large cast iron grill pan that goes over two burners on the stove. This is basically like bringing the camping stove inside your house. You could also use a regular skillet as long as it’s large enough to cook multiple peach halves at the same time.

GRIDDLE: You can also use an electric griddle. With any of these methods make sure to oil your peaches so that they don’t stick.

Storing and Reheating

Store: You should store grilled peaches in the fridge in an airtight container. They will  last 2-3 days in the fridge. You can reheat them in the microwave until warmed through. The trick, however, is making sure that you don’t accidentally dry them out. You can add a bit of extra butter to give some moisture back to the peaches.

Reheat: To reheat in the oven, set the oven to a low heat and check the peaches periodically until they are warmed through. Again, you may want to add some more butter when serving.
