Recipe Ingredients

A hand holding a cracker with a portion of classic cheese ball spread on it.
  • Cream Cheese: The key ingredient in this delicious appetizer. I recommend using full-fat cream cheese for its thick and creamy texture and it holds everything together really well. However, you could probably get away with using reduced-fat cream cheese.
  • Seasonings: A blend of onion powder, garlic powder, seasoned salt (Lowry’s is our favorite), and a pinch of cayenne pepper for a little kick.
  • Hot Sauce: Yes, hot sauce! Don’t worry, the recipe only calls for a dash of hot sauce, but it really enhances the overall flavor.

Variations

  • Mix-Ins: Adding chopped green onions, bacon bits, or minced jalapeños are great options to mix into the cheese ball for extra flavor and texture.
  • Garnish Options: To enhance the presentation and add a bit of crunch, consider garnishing the cheese ball with crushed chips, or pretzels.

How to Make Classic Cheese Ball

Step 1: In a medium-sized mixing bowl (or in the bowl of a stand mixer), mix the cream cheese and seasonings until smooth. Sprinkle in the cheddar cheese and mix until just combined.

Step 2: Roll the mixture into a round ball (you can lightly coat your hands with cooking spray if that makes it easier, but because the ball is cold, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue).

Step 3: Place the chopped nuts into a standard-sized bowl and roll to cover the ball entirely. You may need to pat some of the nuts into areas that aren’t covered. Cover the cheese ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Expert Tips

  • Chill Before Shaping: After mixing the ingredients, refrigerate the mixture for 15-20 minutes before shaping it into a ball. This helps the cheese ball hold its shape better and prevents it from sticking to your hands.
  • Double-Coat with Nuts: For extra crunch, roll the cheese ball in chopped nuts twice. After the first coating, refrigerate for 10 minutes, then roll it again for a thicker, more even nut coating.

FAQs

How should I serve the Classic Cheese Ball?

Serve it with an assortment of crackers, bread, or fresh veggies for dipping. You can also pair it with fruit preserves or honey for a sweet and savory combination.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes, you can make the cheese ball up to a week ahead of time without adding the nuts. Adding the nuts should be the last step to prevent them from getting soft and soggy in the fridge. Once the cheese ball is formed, place it in an airtight bag or container and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

Storage Tips

To STORE the Classic Cheese Ball, keep it in the refrigerator before and after serving, ensuring it doesn’t sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge, and it will last for up to 2 weeks if fresh ingredients are used.

You can FREEZE it by forming the cheese ball, wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap twice, and placing it in an airtight bag. Freeze without the nuts, as they can get soggy after thawing. They can be frozen for up to a month. To SERVE, thaw it in the fridge overnight, then roll in crushed nuts before serving.
