Cheesy garlic bread

Cheesy Bread for the Win!

To be honest, I’ve never been a super big fan of homemade garlic bread. I know, I’m crazy! It’s always been kind of bland to me. Grabbing a freshly buttered loaf at our local grocery store’s bakery was my thing… until now.

I decided it was time to tackle the classic Italian side. I wanted my bread to be cheesy, flavorful, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. It is so delicious and easy that you will be saying bye-bye to bland bread!!

Oh yeah – plus, it’s so easy.

Homemade garlic bread wrapped in foil

How to Make Garlic Bread

Lucky for us, this recipe is no fail, is easy and is beyond delicious.

Grab two extra-large pieces of aluminum foil and cut the loaf in half lengthwise. Place one half on each piece of foil

Mix up the buttery garlic-herb mixture and drizzle it over the bread.

Wrap the bread up in foil and bake it for a good 10 minutes at 375 degrees.

Remove the bread from the oven, open the foil up and sprinkle with a generous amount of mozzarella and parmesan cheese. If you like it extra cheesy, I’d suggest using a three cheese blend of sorts.

Place it back in the oven and let it bake until the cheese gets melty and the edges are golden brown. Remove and sprinkle with more cheese and parsley.

How to Store + Reheat Garlic Bread + FAQ

This recipe doesn’t need to be refrigerated, just keep any leftover slices in an air-tight bag to keep the bread as fresh as possible. Also, keep an eye on the cheese to make sure that it

doesn’t get moldy.

To reheat cheesy garlic bread, wrap leftover bread, in a single layer, in foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees until warmed through (about 10 to 15)

You can make this bread ahead of time and freeze or freeze leftovers. Just mix up a giant batch, slice and freeze it on cookie sheets. Once frozen throw them into Ziploc bags. When you want cheesy bread, just pull out a few slices and bake them right out of the freezer (no defrosting necessary)

Recipe FAQs:

Can I make this with different types of bread? We like French bread or an Italian loaf with a good crust. But you could use pretty much any bread (artisan bread, sourdough, Texas Toast and we have even used hamburger/hot dog buns). If you want to adapt this recipe, just keep an eye on the cooking time so that you aren’t accidentally burning the edges or the whole loaf!

How can I make it more crispy? If you want a crispier top on your bread I suggest broiling it for the last few minutes of the uncovered time. This is done by hitting the broil function on the oven and placing your bread on the top rack of the oven.

What is in Italian seasoning? Basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary make up Italian seasoning.

Is it better with stale bread? Personally I say no because one of the greatest things about this recipe is that the crust is nice and crunchy but the actual bread is nice and fluffy and light. The contrast of textures is amazing! Using an older loaf of bread would result in a giant piece of cheesy toast.

Do I need to wrap it in foil? I suggest wrapping if you want to keep the outer edge from getting too crisp. Plus it creates steam which gives you a softer bread.

Garlic bread with cheese

Super simple, yet so delicious!

This recipe is really easy to throw together while your main dish is cooking or can be prepped in advance and heated when needed. It goes great with just about anything! If you’re looking for a great garlic bread recipe, this is it!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf french bread - or Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup salted butter - (1 stick), softened
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp garlic - minced
  • 1 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher sea salt
  • 1 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup finely shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley - OR 1 tsp. dried parsley flakes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Using a large bread knife, slice the bread in half lengthwise. Cut two sheets of foil about 24-inch long and place on a baking sheet, side by side. Place the bread on top of the foil.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, using a spatula, mix the butter, olive oil, garlic, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and salt together until smooth and creamy. Spread the mixture over both bread halves. Wrap the foil over the sides of the bread and crimp, then roll up the ends of the foil. Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven, open the foil and roll down around the edges of the garlic bread. Sprinkle with half of the parmesan, then all of the mozzarella, finish with the remaining parmesan.
  • Return to the oven and bake uncovered for 6 minutes or until the cheese is melty and it begins to brown. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with additional parmesan (if desired) and parsley. Slice and serve immediately.

NOTES

  • You can make this in advance and store it in your refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • You can keep the bread warm by re-wrapping it after it is fully baked, and keeping it in the oven at 200 degrees for up to 30 minutes.
